Civil engineer CV: projects, codes and IEB membership

How to present project value and scope, which codes to name, and why the software list is doing more work than your job titles.

A civil engineering CV is read as a project list first and a career history second. The employer wants to know what you have built, at what scale, and whether you can be trusted with theirs.

Lead with projects, quantified

Each project needs four facts: what it was, how big, your role, and what you were accountable for.

"Structural design and site supervision for a 14-storey commercial building in Gulshan, BDT 62 crore, as lead engineer for the RCC package."

Scale matters more than duration in this field. A junior engineer on a large project has seen more than a senior on a small one, and employers know it.

Name the codes

BNBC, ACI 318, AASHTO, BS, Eurocode — whichever you have actually designed to. This is a filter for employers and a keyword for parsers, and leaving it out is one of the commonest omissions in Bangladeshi engineering CVs.

If you have worked to a foreign code on an internationally funded project, say so explicitly. It is a differentiator.

The software list is doing real work

AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, Primavera P6, MS Project, Revit. Employers filter on these directly.

Say what you did in each rather than listing them flat: "ETABS — modelled and designed the lateral system for two 12-storey structures" is worth more than "ETABS" on its own.

IEB membership belongs in the header

If you are a member of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, put the membership number in your contact line. For roles that require a chartered engineer, this is a screening criterion, not a nice-to-have.

Site experience versus design experience

Employers hire for one or the other, and CVs frequently blur them. Be clear about the split. If you have both, say so — it is genuinely rarer than it sounds and worth stating in the summary.

Site facts worth including: number of engineers and workers supervised, months without a lost-time injury, quantities executed, whether you handled running bills and measurement.

Safety record

If you have a clean safety record on a project of any size, say it plainly. "Maintained 18 months without a lost-time injury across a site of 220 workers" is one of the strongest single lines a site engineer can put on a CV.

Layout

The Blueprint template is a restrained single column with room for project values, codes and site experience. For mechanical engineering the Torque template is tighter and fits a longer plant and equipment history; for electrical, the Circuit template puts standards and software in a sidebar.
