How to explain an employment gap on your CV
Gaps are common and rarely fatal. What sinks applications is the attempt to hide one. How to present it in a line and move on.

Employment gaps are ordinary. Illness, caring for family, redundancy, relocation, study, a pandemic. What causes problems is not the gap — it is an unexplained hole that a reader fills in with something worse than the truth.
Name it in one line
A gap becomes a problem when it looks concealed. Give it an entry like any other:
`` Career break — family caregiving 2023 – 2024 Full-time care for a family member. Completed the CIPD Level 3 certificate during this period. ``
One line of explanation. No apology, no elaborate justification.
Use years, not months, for short gaps
If your CV shows "2019 – 2021" and "2021 – present", a four-month gap disappears without any dishonesty. Month-level precision invites questions about periods that do not matter.
For gaps beyond a year, be explicit. Trying to obscure those is what damages credibility.
Say what you did, if you did something
Study, freelance work, volunteering, a certification, learning a language, managing a family business. Any of these turn a gap into a period.
If you genuinely did none of it — because you were ill, or grieving, or caring for someone full-time — that is a complete answer. "Career break for health reasons, now fully recovered and available" needs no further detail, and you are not obliged to give any.
How much to disclose
Very little. You do not owe an employer a medical history or family details. The categories below are sufficient on a CV:
- Health or medical leave
- Family caregiving
- Parental leave
- Full-time study
- Redundancy and job search
- Relocation
- Military or national service
Any of these can be stated in four words.
Redundancy is not a gap you need to explain
Being made redundant along with a department is a fact about the company, not about you. If it was a mass redundancy, saying so removes the question: "Role eliminated in a company-wide restructure, 2024."
Address it once, then stop
The commonest mistake is over-explaining. A paragraph justifying a gap draws more attention to it than a line, and reads as anxiety. State it, then let the rest of the CV carry the case.
Prepare the spoken version
The CV line buys you the interview. Have two calm sentences ready for the conversation, ending in the present: what happened, what you did, and why you are ready now.
Layout
Any single-column template handles this cleanly, because gaps read as gaps when dates sit in a clear vertical column. Start with the Classic template in the builder and add the break as an ordinary experience entry.
