Australian resumes run longer than American ones and are more forgiving of detail.
Two to three pages
Australians expect more than a US employer would. Three pages is acceptable for an experienced candidate, and a one-page resume can read as underselling.
Named referees are still normal
Unlike the UK and US, Australian employers frequently expect two referees with names, titles and contact details on the resume itself. Ask permission first, and warn them.
Key skills section near the top
A short block listing your core capabilities, before the employment history, is a local convention and worth following.
Visa status
If you are not a citizen or permanent resident, state your visa and its work rights. Employers screen on this early, and vagueness costs you the application.
Selection criteria
Government and many large-organisation roles require separate written responses to "selection criteria" β a distinct document addressing each requirement with evidence. Where you see these, they matter more than the resume.
Other conventions
- A4 paper
- Australian spelling: organised, recognise, but "program" not "programme"
- No photo, no date of birth
